Mary Halvorson, Guitar
Mary Halvorson and Jessica Pavone have been collaborating
for over three years to create a unique body of duo music. The pair
combines lush melodies with textural improvisation and jagged rhythms
to create concise, enigmatic musical episodes. Their collaboration
utilizes a variety of timbres, achieved through amplification and
electronic effects as well as acoustic presentation. Halvorson and
Pavone, each of whom contributed original compositions to the project,
have developed a constantly expanding repertoire comprised of over
50 pieces. This concert celebrates the release of their first album
on the Lucky Kitchen label.

Chester Biscardi - The Viola Had Suddenly Become a Voice,
Chester Biscardi for viola and piano (2005)(World Premier)
The Viola Had Suddenly Become a Voice was
written in memory of Jacob Glick, internationally recognized violist
and teacher. He was principal viola in many groups, and as a chamber
music coach his inspirational and kind guidance was legendary. He
championed the music of the 18th century in his performance of numerous
works for the viola d'amore, and he was an advocate of contemporary
music and of living composers, premiering over 200 new works as
a performer and encouraging the study and performance of new music
as a music festival director and as a college teacher and coach.
The Viola Had Suddenly Become a Voice takes as its departure a
quote from the last movement of Robert Schumann's Piano Quartet
in E-flat Major, Op. 47 (1842), and includes self-references to
Di Vivere, for clarinet in A and piano, with flute, violin and
violoncello (1981), a work of mine that Jacob Glick admired.

Michael Jarrell - "...more leaves..." for Viola, Sextet
and Electronics (US Premiere)
PROGRAM NOTE FOR MICHAEL JARRELL VIOLA PIECE: More Leaves (2000)
Taken from From the Leaves of Shadow (1991), a concerto for viola
and orchestra in which the solo instrument must face, sometimes
in direct opposition, a relatively imposing orchestral mass, More
Leaves (2000) for viola and a mixed ensemble of instruments and
live electronics, continues to explore the colors and registers
of an instrument that Michael Jarrell loves as much for its sonorities
as for its hidden playing possibilities. Here the electronics
are not a substitute for the original orchestral parts but, like
a sonic shadow, enrich the solo instrument with deep and matte
colors.
For Jarrell, the attraction to low instruments is nothing new
and, as Pierre Michel has noted, this love of the depths is perhaps
connected to the idea of shadow, often present in the titles of
his works: Der Schatten, das Band, dass uns an die Erde bindet
(1989, Shadow, this band which ties us to the Earth); ...d'Ombres
lointaines (1989-90, ...of faraway shadows...); From the Leaves
of Shadow (1991, for viola and orchestra.)
In this regard, Michael Jarrell has already evoked the importance
of Franz Schubert's Song of the Spirits on the Water for men's
choir and orchestra without violins: through it I discovered an
extremely somber world and some extraordinary deep registers with
a great number of resulting harmonics, offering a listening experience
enriched by the friction between sonorities and absolutely fascinating
timbres. As in ...some leaves II... (1998), a work for solo viola
derived from the same concerto, More Leaves is sometimes an exact
copy of the original concerto, with its opposition of extremely
high (brilliant) and extremely low (more or less matte) registers.
However, it distinguishes itself through a nostalgic distance,
characterized by a new and much more intimate language.
More Leaves was premiered on November 25, 1998
at IRCAM (projection
space) by Odile Duhamel.
