Glyde Scholarships for 2006
The New York Viola Society is pleased to introduce the recipients

to the scholarships that we have traditionally awarded to students
of high school age and younger, we instituted a special Harold Coletta

Daniel Lay from Ridgewood, New Jersey, a student of Alexander
Rees at the JCC Thurnauer School of Music in Tenafly, New
Jersey. Daniel attends the Academy of Our Lady in Glen Rock, New
Jersey where he has finished seventh grade. In addition to the viola,
he also plays violin, piano and bass guitar. Daniel's performances
have won him notice at various summer festivals and competitions
such as ASTA and MTNA, including state division winner in New Jersey
for the 2005 MTNA Junior Strings Competition, and first alternate
for the MTNA Northeastern Region Junior Strings Competition. "I
like the viola because the tonality and sound of a viola heightens
the level of my creativity and ability to make beautiful music.
It has a deeper and richer tone than the violin, and it is a challenging
instrument to play. One of my musical dreams is to not only be a
soloist but to also be in a band with my friends."
Isabel Hagen from New York City, a student of Kenji
Bunch at The Juilliard School Pre-College Division, where
she plays in the Pre-College Symphony and a string quartet. Isabel
finished ninth grade in the spring at Saint Ann's School, where
she plays in a trio for viola, voice and piano. "I switched to viola
in my sixth year of studying the violin. This was because I heard
my brother's friend play Bach's Fifth Suite and a Shostakovich Sonata.
I loved the rich sound of the instrument, and this inspired me to
start the viola. Now, I am enjoying the study of Paul Hindemith's
music for viola, and hope to play as much of his work as possible.
I also enjoy playing in string quartets very much." Isabel also
received a Rosemary Glyde Scholarship in 2002.
Hari Bernstein from New York City, a private student of
Kenneth Mirkin. Hari will begin college at The Juilliard
School in the fall of 2006. She has performed as soloist with the
Lucy Moses Orchestra, Lucy Moses Chamber Ensemble, State Symphony
Orchestra of Ukraine and Kiev Pops. She has participated in the
2003 Soesterberg Music Festival in Holland, School for Strings Summer
Chamber Music Workshop, New York State Summer School of the Arts
and the Aspen Music Festival and School. She was a member of New
York's ISO Symphony from 2002 to 2004, and continues with that group
teaching violin as part of its Teaching Intern Program. Since 2003
she has been a part of the New York Youth Symphony, for which she
served as principal violist this last season. She received a Rosemary
Glyde Scholarships in 2004 as well as other honors and awards. This
year she was recognized as a Commended Student in the 2006 National
Merit Scholarship Program.
Harold Coletta Memorial Scholarship
David Lau, who this spring finished his undergraduate studies
at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Heidi Castleman
and Hsin-Yun Huang. Mr. Lau, a native of Oregon, began
playing the viola at age 11. A graduate of the Interlochen Arts
Academy, he has appeared as soloist with the Eugene and Oregon Ballet
Symphonies as well as with the Interlochen Arts Academy and Music
Academy of the West orchestras. An avid chamber musician, Mr. Lau
has collaborated with violinist Joseph Silverstein and violist Barbara
Westphal and performed numerous chamber music concerts in Alice
Tully Hall and Paul Hall. He has attended many festivals, including
the Perlman Music Program, Sarasota Music Festival and IMS Prussia
Cove.
Assisting members of the board with the selection of scholarship
recipients and finalists for the Harold Coletta Scholarship were
Madeline Blum Benhabib and Wendy Keyes. Serving as the panel for
the finals for the Coletta Scholarship were Heidi Castleman, Caroline
Levine and Daniel Avshalomov. We thank them for generously giving
us of their time.
The New York Viola Society congratulates these talented young people,
and wishes them success in their musical and other endeavors. Congratulations
also to their teachers who have done such excellent work in teaching
these wonderful, talented young people. We wish all of our members
and friends to join with the scholarship committee and NYVS board
in recognizing the important positive contribution that these students
and their teachers make, and for the joy and inspiration that they
bring us. We wish them the best in all of their endeavors, musical
and otherwise, and hope to have the chance to hear them play many
more times over the years.
